Stainless Steel 440C has around 17-18.5% chromium, 0.95-1.20% carbon, and trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and molybdenum. This gives the alloy outstanding hardness (up to 58-60 HRC) after heat treatment, as well as high tensile strength (up to 150 ksi). It also provides adequate corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive conditions. Even though 440C is less corrosion-resistant than austenitic stainless steels, it is particularly suitable for use where there is a high demand for strength and wear resistance. The alloy also finds suitable application in getting a fine finish and is very machinable following heat treatment.
